Southland Times - Sir Hannibal Heyes

Posted 6th June 2014 to the Southland Times Invercargill NZ

It’s great to read Te Anau’s Richard (Hannibal) Hayes and his older Brother Juno getting Queens Birthday Honours..
Just a point of Folklore history, it was never really confirmed that Richard’s Nick Name Hannibal was taken from an outlaw character in the 1971 TV series Alias Smith and Jones, Played by the late Pete Duel called Hannibal Heyes, A fictional member of Butch Cassidy’s Notorious Hole in the Wall Gang out of Wyoming in the 1860s.
Yet I first recall hearing the name Hannibal Hayes the Helicopter Pilot in the 1970s in the Wild West days of Fiordland’s Helicopter Cowboys, you gotta wonder if there is a connection? Sir Richard looks Nothing like Pete Duel...
