Thanks for the Talk with Anne Manne about the scourge of Narcissism sweeping our planet.
As we can see in US Politics the late Queen of “The Self” Ann Rand has caused a modern epidemic of self induced insanity that threatens civilization as we know it.

Darwin would agree that the desire to contribute to a greater good has been one of Humanities greatest assets in building civilizations.
Unfortunately empathy is soluble when mixed with too much prosperity ! ...And withered with too much poverty.

I suppose the big problem with the John Key tourism model if that it is brainless..

As usual we are not thinking about what we want or where we are going  but we do know
Someone will benefit at the expense of someone else if we leave thinking to the “invisible hand”

AS it stands at the moment Air New Zealand is “dumping” passengers on this country without thought to where they will all go.
And they have encouraged other airlines to follow..

The Department of Conservation is a bunch of New Age Hippies thrown into the Tourism business there structure is not set up
to deal with business and there are no internal incentives for them to change. And... any money they make is stripped from them
by the Beehive.

Kiwis are not able to get into the tourism game as they did in the past unless they have a war-chest to set them selves up for that is a fickle
Industry.

Airline carbon footprints and Chinese middle class desires are not set in stone at this point in the narrative...
nor is our exchange rate.

If we want to make use of this boom we can only manage it on a government level ... It is not a good private investment portfolio because it is all based on
windfalls of incompetence.

Even the “High Stake” private companies (like Real Journeys) are riddled with Paranoia about the future to a point where they live in fear of shadows.

AS for the HUGE campsite of the Eglinton Valley Fiordland, The NZ taxpayer is footing the bill basically subsidizing the Milford Tourist Boat Companies early boat departures
at the expense of the Local Motor Park Industry

You are really getting into the big stuff this morning on the Importance of Honesty in the Media and Civilization
I have been watching the rise of Political Comedians in the USA and I Wonder if they are filling a void caused by a boated overbearing & joyless political System
That expects us all to fall in line like Robots. I am glad that that portion of the Media is trying to call bullshit on this nonsense despite it difficulty to view in New Zealand.

I have to ask Why Larry Wilmore is not Screened on Maori Television ? Perhaps his way of looking at life might help people understand just how the USA effects every minority in the
World ...

Your Discussion about Women Screenwriters & Producers is topical not just with Ghost Busters but the Latest FARGO TV series showing some interesting background plot devices with women .

Also There was a Ironic ending where the Gangsters of Old cashed in their guns to become ruthless businessmen  which raises the question about what effect that move has had on our civilization !

NZ Tourism Bubble - Blame the Airlines

The Problem we have with Tourism is too many Airline Seats dumping masses of people on a Small Population.

We are not geared up for unregulated Chaos every time the Dollar is cheap , Either regulate the Flow or
Put a Massive Landing Tax to sort out the scroungers from the proper tourists .

Our Tourism Minister is asleep at the wheel...

You Should Watch the USA TV Series “Silicon Valley” a comedic look at how the World of Tech Operates..

Also they mention “Datageddon” as a point in which all the Crap we store in the “Cloud” becomes to expensive to store and we physically cant build enough server farms to store it all..

BTW there is some evidence Youtube was doing some culling this month they seem to hit a few Liberal Progressive Channels which might we a worry for Robbie...

The problem with prolonged exposure to right wing Government like we have in NZ is that they
basically hate you if you are not capable of working hard and paying more taxes, so we live under a veil of fear, fear
that should we fall down we will be crushed under the feet of an uncaring World. It seriously makes some people wonder why they
where brought into existence in the first place. No one in a fragile mental state should have to live under such conditions.

Misery is no objective for an enlightened society.

I am afraid that if your not a Celebrity or a person of means then John Key and his party simply Hate you, as neglect is a form of hate.

There is one solution that if you ARE hated you should be allowed to HATE them Back... Especially at the next election !
and our media should respect descent not fear it.

 I Love that the Department on Conservation is setting up a team to Catalog NZs indigenous Fauna
I try to Volunteer some of my spare time to getting more of Fiordland National Park on the Internet.
I have added to Wikipedia in the past but it is awkward for one with limited resources as you need reference details from actual Published Material
And supply your own photographs put into pubic dominion, if you have news cutting with no date they are not useable.. And most modern news print is about sensation and not boring facts or History.
Also Journalist can speculate and get printed but that is not a tool one can use on Wikipedia.

Still, Good on all the Volunteers that keep this grand Idea of Communal Knowledge alive  you deserve some kind acknowledgement..

Sometimes there are things we don’t ever want to know.. One is How many Vicious Angry Stupid American White men there are .

The upshot is the USA is Clearly in need of Proportional Representation as having a two party system where one side is barking mad means no choice at all.
The Real Election Battle should be between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders who are more representative of the way the political divide use to be Last Century.

There is an ugly mood in the USA from the People who are not getting a fair shake from the System
But there is also a Dark mood from the People who have done well by it. As we know the SYSTEM loves winners and despises losers
But what if the luck runs out... The one time winners get angry and want to bust the place up... If Trump wants to make a deal with the US Voters
He is going to have to take a leaf out of the Sanders Doctrine and find out a way to make less losers and also Fix the Pending Environment Crunch
otherwise the house of Cards will tumble.. As Mr Sanders Pointed out the Status Quo is broken it is only held together by President Obama being a Miracle Worker.
 Tho' he will be out of it...

 

Future of the Media 2016 New Zealand

Jim, I think the old model of each regional center having its own Daily Paper dates back to the Dawn of News Media.

If we where to Start again, one National paper with regional supplements would suffice and its digital Version
Would be the subscription and paper version would be discounted with abbreviated stories.

Failing that a State Newspaper could be in order.. Based on the material from State Radio and Television
(if we bring back state television as we should)  to stop the Australian  & Offshore Media Barons interfering in our democracy.

It Really is simple, People want news not propaganda they have to pay for and the Internet Is the answer to Rupert Murdoch and his Cowboys.

In his untold History of the United States TV Series he recalls all the Nasty Things we in the West have done that burns on and we try hard to forget.

NZs Tourism Bubble of 2016 - Radio New Zealand

 After hearing the Comments of an Achedemic on the State of the overcrowding of our Tourism Facilities
I have this to say on the Comments on your show:

We people in the Industry don’t wish our Image to be tarnished but
More and More Planes are allowed to Bring Tourists Here at cut rates without any thought as to where they can stay.

For example on the Milford Road one small campsite at Lake Gunn had 500 people in it a few nights ago. At a time when most Kiwis wish to use their National Parks
They are squashed out!

This summer has shown us what happens when we have an inept Minister of Tourism at the Helm
As the newspaper stories about Milford Sound Tourism numbers show ...

NZ Could be a nice quality destination product but  if we are going to have a procession of crazy booms & busts
no one can seriously invest in the Tourism Industry or work in it for any kind of lifestyle.

 Now that the World wants to take action on frivolous burning of carbon  it looks like this Crazy Rollercoaster is going to run out of steam
In the end anyway.

Maybe, with any luck, dedicated longer term tourism will return if we don’t damage our image of being a greedy tacky over crowded, over priced boom & Bust
sort of destination .

Your Program got it right this morning... We are living in a different century and we need to deal with different problems..
THE USA has been Following it’s old formula of protecting it’s interests with Military Force and not keeping the Peace as a Superpower should.
All the problems of today are down to a couple of supreme court Judges in the USA who took it upon themselves put George W Bush in Power and bounced out a President who
understood the need to change with the times. And be a force of reason.

Eventually as more and more people are educated there will be a critical  A HAH moment when we collectively realize we are all vulnerable human beings together in charge of our own survival.

Why are people sounding Happy that our Tourism Industry will be broken by shear numbers in February
This is not good for the Country or the Industry it is a Bubble.
Our Government has failed us again. Surely the objective of good Tourism is To improve the Quality of the Product
Not burst it for a four week boom. Ironically the Department of Conservation is the Key Player in Our Tourism Industry yet there is a total lack of Funds
For the Department to Improve its Services and Products let alone Expand them.

The system is Broken and our Tourism Leadership is about inept as it can be.
