Thank you Southland Times for your Fiordland Stories 12th June,
Thank goodness for the Fiordland Outdoor Recreation Club Getting Stuck in to fixing the Mistake at Mistake Creek
That caused a man to perish. Actually Mistake Creek is the sight of a few mistakes, It is Aptly, Named Sir Erskine Bowmar
Started the Tradition of Administrative errors in the 1930s when he named the Wrong Peak on the map there. Naming a Peak Billy the Bastard was also a mistake. Then Geologist John Williams had a Bad Key on his typewriter and the Mountain he named was put on the map spelled with a C instead of a G, then the Fiordland National Parks Board made the mistake of re-naming all the features around the Creek with lacklustre names to deter unwanted visitors. Then I made the mistake of trying to restore the earlier names.
It seems a certain Float Plane Pilot made a fatal mistake just after flying over the Creek Then the NZ Geographic Board Made a Mistake of not Officially Naming Mount Tolkien in 2013 which would have been a good boost for local tourism.
The Other big Mistake story in the Paper was the Historic Wreck of the SS Waikere Making a sudden unscheduled Stop at Stop Island in Dusky Sound (Written By Lloyd Estler) Where 141 Passenger and 85 Crew managed to evacuate the stricken Passenger Ship without even getting their feet wet and by good luck got taken home safely and Quickly...
The Coal Fired Waikere sank without harming the Environment at all.. I hate to think How that would have played out today with a Modern Cruise Liner with ten times more People on board... ? So the moral is be careful what you name things!
