the Future of Freedom Camping NZ

Posted 24th June 2017 to the Southland Times Newspaper Invercargill NZ

An Invercargill Man lamented in Wednesdays edition of this paper that Freedom Camping was once a New Zealanders rite and Camping grounds are far too expensive now.

Yes back in the day Kiwis could pull off the road any old where and set up camp without breaking any rules but mostly they stayed in basic budget campgrounds set aside for them.
However the Campgrounds Associations kind of broke this deal when the split into referral groups to cash in on the boom of overseas visitors, not only did they have to increase prices to
Afford the huge joining fees but they had to upgrade their facilities a great expense, then the Property Market in resorts went crazy and the rates shot up accordingly and workers then became harder to get.

Travel agents overseas discovered that selling Campervan Holidays was way more lucrative than cumbersome Motel based itineraries and would even lie about accommodation availability in New Zealand .

As the Airlines dump more and more shoestring travelers on this finite industry camps could also raise their rates without any kickback for all but the most destitute visitors..
Unfortunately governments are slow to respond to new problems and things are a tad out of control and the poor old rate / tax payer are having to foot the bill for this mess.

In Manapouri at least we try to stick to the pubic service campground idea but times and habits have changed and now people expect something for nothing especially those who have money to burn.
For all this it is still a short unreliable season for the private sector. Lament all you like but it’s only going to get worse the way things are going. Our rest areas & beaches will be festooned with toilet paper unless we act.

Garry Tong's - Mayoral Can of Worms

Posted 23rd August 2016 to the Southland Times Newspaper Invercargill NZ

I can’t help feeling that the Around the Mountain Headache could have been avoided if the Mayor Tong was not so insulated from the general public and friends by his people.

I use to be able to share news & observations with Mr Tong before his ordination as Mayor but sadly could not communicate directly with him afterward.

I tried to pass on serious reservations about “The Around the Mountain” Cycle-way project that our previous Mayor had missed due to mortality concerns at the time, clearly Mr Tong’s inner circle filtered community feedback
That could have saved rate payers Millions of Dollars.

The District Council will need to be mindful that they can not rely on investigative journalists to save them from stuff ups these days as they are now very thin on the ground as is money for legal advice when cans of worms are opened up in pursuit of uncomfortable truths.

Southland could have saved and restored the Kingston Flyer 10 times over for the price of this mess and that WOULD be a true unique tourism icon to the region.

Oh Sorry, that is another unopened can of worms caused by blind faith gone wrong from the Otago Southland Border Region.

Cycle the Te Aroa Trail ? Te Anau NZ

Posted 3rd February 2016 to the Southland Times Newspaper Invercargill

It should say something about Roger Hodgkinson’s  Front Page Cycle Trail Proposal  of Jan 25th to make the Round the Mountain Trail a More Southland Friendly Option.
There is no doubt that Te Anau is Southland’s Tourism Hub and it seems bizarre that it was not included in the current discussion on the National Trail Network.
I think that if Roger’s Trail Spur Idea can not be taken seriously by the Southland District than is might be an Idea to use it as a Riding and Hiking Trail as there are increasingly fewer opportunities for Horse Trekking in the Area.
Come to think of it the Te Aroa Trail that runs down the Nation’s spine and the Mararoa River Catchment could be converted to Riding and Hiking  perhaps with a spur trail  over the Takatimu Mountains.
Trying to keep a Cycle trail up to International Standards with Horse Traffic is very problematic but is not a big issue on a walkway. Especially the Te Aroa Section down the Mararoa which is said to be quite overgrown.

Invercargill Airport - 1960s Heritage Area

Posted 19th June 2015 to the Southland Times Newspaper Invercargill NZ

I have to say...
I think its sad we can’t preserve the Old Invercargill Airport Terminal as a 1960s Heritage Building....  It is so quintessentially 1960s that it stands out like an Icon of the Era.
So before it is Bulldozed into oblivion someone should have a 1960s Party there with some bootleg Beatles and Classic 1960s Cars....

It could actually make a theme Restaurant if it wasn’t for the lack of affordable parking.. Sort of  Like they did with the classic 1960s Viewing Structure at Los Angeles International Airport..

Yes Invercargill is not LA but it has a certain Retro Charm missing in other cities. Somehow I could just see 1960s Kiwiana on display and 1960s Stewardess’s waiting tables as guests watch the 1960s Style Cessna Planes come and go across the Runway... Reflecting of the days when The Smelter wasn’t on life-support and we had a District Health Board and John Key was just a Schoolboy with a crazy dream.

Frana Cardno - Memorial Walkway

Posted 4th May 2015 to the Southland Express Newspaper Invercargill

Thank you for doing a nice write up on the late Frana Cardno our Colourful ex Southland District Mayoress
I would love to see the District Council remember Frana and Her Husband Murray in a project they both supported: the Manapouri Te Anau Cycleway.
There was one area in question that would be deserving, the Manapouri End of the Cycle Trail had an Easement to the Summit of View Hill set aside
For the Cycletrail and the People of Te Anau and Manapouri.Frana said on Several occasions that the new Moturau Heights Subdivision Needed this yet
It somehow got inadvertently removed by an Council “bungle”. It was Put to the Council that the lake in the Subdivision Reserve Should be named Manuska Pond after Frana’s Childhood Nick Name
And that as the Reserve Parking Area could be easily linked by Walkway to View Hill through the National Park that could then be named the Cardino Walkway making View Hill 360 Panarama  Frana and Murray’s Memorial. Which Would in turn be linked through to the near by Manapouri Te Anau  Cycleway project...

Feel Free to ask the SDC to Comment :-)
