The day the World nearly ended in 1962

Posted 20th October 2015 to the Southland Times Newspaper Invercargill NZ

There are a lot of events our society likes to remember but this time in 1962 the leaders of the superpowers of the world
Thought they might never see another day and if not for one officer on a Russian submarine, Human Civilization could have been snuffed out for ever.

People where terrified on a mass scale at that time, yet we hardly ever talk about it now and just what trauma that event had on our collective
psyche.

It seemed for a while from the young for the rest of that decade that there could be a better way of Living than Constant Fear and that we
Might make use of our lucky escape.

Sadly subsequent generations have not really learned  much from this and the once great United States has shunned Stern pro-active leadership since then in favor of leaving the the Peoples of the World
To scrap amongst themselves as slaves to strategic economics or just blatantly encouraging internal conflicts.

What thanks did Nikita Khrushchev get for Backing Down? He was removed from power and humiliated.

President Kennedy was also seen as weak for allowing this to happen, and sadly

nobody knows who Vasilli Alexandrovich Arkhipov is, or what service he did for Humanity...

I Hope Fairfax Media remembers :-)
